Hello there,
I'm a 61 year old that used to do a lot of welding up cars for MOT's. I had a Migatronic MX180, that I kept for thirty years (no idea why, it seemed too good to get rid..) but then the car restoration bug bit recently, I bought myself a 77 Cavalier Mk1 coupe as a fixer-upper. No more welding on over sills for me.. The Migatronic has packed in (probably a circuit board) so I bought a Kuhtreiber 20 40, it seems a little known make, but is European, and has a good guarantee. Suddenly butt welding 0.9 mm is easy, and using an auto-darkening helmet, I no longer start in the vicinity of where I want to weld, but actually where I want to weld. I'm delighted to have a hobby again. I've taken a month on the front valance, even though spare panels are available, but that's what it's all about, spending endless happy hours doing futile stuff.. I'll probably spend a few thousand hours on it, and maybe push the value up a few hundred Yoyo (€uro to you..)
