Hello from Newcastle

Just took delivery of my welder today it is a Lincoln Electric SP 170-1 and I can't wait to use it, never welded before but it doesn't mean I can't! I'm into building motorbikes mainly but appreciate anything that people build for themselves especially if it has an engine. I'm a first year engineering apprentice by day and self employed sound engineer by night, so fairly new to working with metal and all the terminology involved. I'm sure the internet will help me learn as always, google is my best friend sometimes.

Next purchase will be a mask and I've already been doing some research in your forums. I'm interested in the weldequip auto darkening ones, are they still available?

Hello and welcome Dan, I,m near redcar, Also got a Lincoln 170-1 big boy. Excellent machine, I,v even done nice flat continuous welds on 0.025" stainless with 0.6mm wire,

Cheers mate, look forward to learning how to do this properly, just trying to get my head around the whole 'which gas?' debate. I work in a bar so pub gas would be no problem to get hold of and pretty cheap, but it seems like a mix would be the better choice. Need to locate some prices and details of local suppliers as I've already decided that BOC will be too expensive for my needs. Money has run out for the foreseeable future however, so I can only plan and scheme for the time being.
