Hello everyone

I have wanted to have a go at welding for many years and I have finally taken the plunge.

I recently bought myself a Clarkes gasless welder, the 105en model, I also bought some clamps, snippers and a mask that goes dark when you start the flame. I got an offer through from MachineMart which saved my between 10 and 15%, I could not afford to spend anymore and I know the machine will have limitations, but I really hope I have bought wisely.

I have a couple of cars that need some attention and the idea is to practice on an old wing before letting myself loose on the cars. The cars are a TR7 and a Rover 800 Coupe.

I have been reading some of the threads which have been useful already and so I hope gain more knowledge and information as I get more experience and practice.

Hello Simon,

For welding on the cars of that age you may wish to use gas as the glassless wire can be a bit too much on thin metal. Saying that it can be done, just practise lots. If you have not welded before you should start on something thicker than car body panels, I probably have some steel you can have a go with.

I have had a go on an old wing from one of the 800's. I understand what you mean, it seemed quite harsh and easy to blow holes in the old panel.

I will carry on practicing and see how i get on, i also thought the gasless was better as i need tp do my work outside.
