Ive not done any welding or brazing before but have been thinking for some time of getting a hang of the skills that Ill be needing. The thing is that I do a lot of work with bicycles and I am wishing to build one that is a little abnormal to the norm... What I am hoping to find is someone in York that knows how to weld / braze that will be willing to build it for me and maybe show me a thing or too.

There are a selection bikes like that on this forum, I confess to having been involved in more of a few of them.
What kind 'abnormal' are we talking about? Choopers? Talbikes? recumbents? more abnormal?

I know them in both shops and they dont know any one that can help me!! but thanks for the idea.

The bike is just going to be abnormal in the way that it has 36" wheels but rides like a normal bike. It is not the wheels that are the problem (that was the easy bit as I build wheels for a living) But it is getting the frame built! as the bike is normal apart from the Chain stays are (610mm), Down tube (690mm+) and the forks (750mm+). The angles have to change I think by 1.5' degrees to drop the Bottom bracket hight because of the size of the wheels.
I have phoned around all the frame builders I know of and have been told I would have to pay from £600+ parts upto £1140+ parts with a waiting list of around 4months. I was told the reason is the amount of work needed!!!! but is it not the same as a normal frame just bigger??

Hello, I'm near York, but my 2p worth is thus:

Building a bike frame is not so much about welding, more about the jigging of the frame to ensure it is straight / true etc. Also the notching & mitring of the joints before you even start to think about sticking them together is highly skilled.

It's unlikely your average welder will have all the necessary jigs and tools required and any frame builder will have jigs to suit standard sized wheel bikes (doubt they will make very many 36" wheeled bikes)

£600 + parts for a hand build specialist frame sounds reasonable to me
