can you tel me i have a 250a mig welder why does the amps and vols gages only work while you are welding (whats the use)

the machine will only power the transformer up when you press the trigger. you are only using current (amps) when you have completed the circuit as for the use of this information while you are welding no idea. what make and model of welder is it?
