Hello all.

Im a newbie looking to teach myself to weld. First i gotta say what a fantastic site/forum this is. I have already got a wealth of knowledge just from reading other peoples posts so thanks for that and to who ever runs/set up the site.

Why a sudden interest in welding? Well i guess its gonna be a similar story for alot of you. My 19 year old Swift failed its MOT due to rust a while ago so has been of the road ever since. I was quoted silly amounts to have the welding done so have decided to do the job my self It is daunting but im thinking of it as a labour of love that will hopefully give me a sense of satisfaction if i manage to do it right.

I have decided to go for a Clarke 151te thanks to you guys. But i have a question regarding masks. I want a auto-darkening one but am not really sure what to look for! I see that some are solar-powered! and some batery powered! Are they diffrent or does the sollar pannel charge the battery? Confused Could someone please point be in the right direction, maybe sugest some specific model names/numbers? Safty is a big concern of mine so any help you could give me will be much apreciated.

Welcome to the nut house!,
The Sif lite helmet that weldequip sells (approx £50ish region) is generally regarded as one of the best budget helmets,i think its solar powered but if you pm weldequip he should be able to give the full lowdown,i think he's pretty busy so it might take a few days to get a reply.

The Parweld helmet is pretty good solar auto darkening helmet too.

Whereabouts is your car rusted out?? Be aware that if the welding is expensive you might have to do a lot of dismantling to get to the areas to weld and possibly remove much of the interior (carpets etc).

I built a shed just to house all the parts from my stripped out project car while its apart- the project is likely to take about 3x longer than you expect!
