Hi folks,

I have decided to do a restoration project on an old car I have. It need a fair bit of welding and I have decided to tackle it myself rather than spend ££££ for somebody else to do it.

Am I right in saying MIG is the way to go?

Would it be best for me to try and do a short course or just get a welder and practice on scrap metal?

Any suggestions on what would be the best welder to use. I will mostly be working in a small garage.

hi alan welcome to the forum

as you said mig is the way to go and
the best thing is get your mig and practise on good clean metal
the clarke welders get a good write up here and for a car you should avoid gasless as it isnt too good for thinner metal and also avoid the disposable bottles are they dont last any time at all.

I was thinking about a Clarke as they seem to be decent. I will get a wanted post up and see if anyone has a second hand one.

Would you say its best to practice rather than go on a course (if i can find one in the Glasgow area, been finding that difficult)

if you can get one locally & easily then it never hurts, but if you follow the tutorial on here you will not go far wrong..... or find a local & see if he will give you 1/2h basic intro for beer money... should be easy in glasgow

plenty of practice, plenty of pics & the guys on here will soon put you right.... might have to take a little flack over the pigeon crap though
