Hello Highway, I'm trying to weld a 1mm plate to a chassis that is about 3 - 4mm thick. I'm using my Clarke 90 mig - so far no good - any advice you can offer?
The maximum setting of the 90 amp MIG probably isn't enough to get enough heat up to lay a decent weld on 4mm. If you have any scrap to experiment with try the maximum power setting and increasing the wire speed to suit (will have to be quite high).
Then weld onto the chassis beside but not touching the 1mm plate, and if you get enough power to make a weld pool quickly dip across to the plate then back to the chassis. Keep on going until you have a weld. The torch will spend maybe 80% of it's time over the chassis rather than the 1mm plate, otherwise you might melt the end of the plate.
Penetration will be poor in the 4mm sheet, so the weld might not be very strong. I'd normally use maybe 130 amps for that sort of job.
