I bought a mig welder about 10 years ago to try to do some bodywork on my Beetle but found it very difficult and never got further than burning holes etc in test pieces of metal. Have blown the dust off it recently encouraged partly by looking at some of the info on this website and have purchased a welding helmet from weldequip. Unfortunately the most useful thing I've manged to learn so far is that I will be bankrupt before I learn the technique using disposable gas bottles.

Always worth a drive round any industrial sites, that's how I found my supplier for cheap gas, they did not advertise anything except calor gas but I saw some bottles from the road... went in and got a 'yeah we stock argon. co2, etc etc.
It now costs me £4 a month rent and £30 refill for a large full size bottle, no changeover fee either.

Firstly the shielding gas can be got from "Hobby Gas" or Adam Gas, look on Google for your local dealer. I paid £85.00 deposit and £33.00 for bottle (9litre), next bottle just £33.00 incl VAT.
Deposit can be redeemed any time with return of bottle. No rental, yearly fee etc. Good gas too. The weld is 10x better than with disposable bottles and the weld heat is easier to control. Remember when welding body work to tack at intervals then fill the weld. This prevents distortion of the panel and reducing power on mig will give more control until you get more proficient. Enjoy.
