Helmet brought on eBay?

Brought a secondhand TIG helmet 'used a few times' by the owner only because he'd lost his other helmet and later found it in the shed

I was wondering what people should look out for with regards to welding helmets, anyone care to shed some light on the subject?

Just to show off my first welding helmet I've added some pic's of it below, which £27.50 inc P&P I think is not a bad price for a secondhand helmet?

hmmmmmmmmmmm a camouflage helmet very usefull if your in jungle welding i think u would be noticed when u strike up like

In the event of future use of the helmet, can I buy replacement parts?

Are these generic in some way or differ from helmet to helmet?
I think I've got a 98x40 something view screen and the only thing that puzzled me using it was having the sensitivity up at max, but then I was told I may need to work allot closer to the arc for it to work as it should.

After I tried this things became better but I had to turn down the 9-13 dial a bit(around 10 running 65-75amps) to see OK. Anyway I'll find out later if I've got ARC-eye as I was telling the lads in class! so I think in a few weeks what I'll try to do is source/change the protection screen for a newer one and see if that helps with the response.

I'm not going to winge about the helmet just yet, as it's better then the one I have been using in class, of which has a few nasty spots when looking through the screen when the ARC is lit.

I think it's got something to do with the position I've been sitting in and the distance from the ARC, just wondering if their is anyway to boost the performance maybe mod a battery into the circuit to help out the sensor? (think I'm talking out my bum tbh)

It's a lovely helmet, for a first timer like myself and the price was awesome I just need to work out the best use of it other then planting flowers in for next year

My two cheapies are real sensitive and fast. They work well. I do leave it on top of the welder under a fluorescent lamp to keep it charged. It is too sensitive, will trigger on grinding. I tape over the sensor when using the plasma and sometimes it still triggers.

You won't ge arc eye with it. The UV and IR protection is on all the time.

It looks the same as others I have seen. They work fine, one of mine looks very similar inside.

Thats a sound idea Shenion, I'll try that out in time for next weeks lesson.
I would think an 20watt CFL emitting about 2000Lumen should do the trick.

I'll just leave it almost clamped to the helmet an hour or so before I leave, that should be enough?

The manual on mine say leave it out in the sun for 4 hours before use or if it was stored for a long time.

Have you ever visited England matey, that manual would be defunked here.. Only because it's always raining, infact... it's just started again!

Thanks for the awesome advice Shenion, and it's prolly why I was a we bit unhappy about the useage of the helmet this morning.. hopefully next week that should change and I'll charge up the helmet with the advice given by you

Spent 2 weeks in England in July of '85. Did have many sunny days

As I siad, i have overhead fluorescent lights that keep my 2 helmets charged. A cloudy day was enough too. If it still does not respond reliably, then the internal battery is probably low.

You can get replacement lenses. The cutout for the module is usually a standard size. However, replacement lenses are expensive, more than most helmets cost. These replacements are mainly as retrofits for standard lenses.

I wound never buy a second hand helmet no matter how little use it was supposed to have, my sight is to important for that. If you're serious and are looking at welding as a profession (good luck) you'd be much better off spending more on a better screen.

and MajorPayne as long as you've got the welding screen on right you should not get arc eye. you may have had eye strain or the other thing i do is wear safety glasses under the screen, that should stop it as well

No, but the better ones do filter out the harmful UV so you won't permanently damage your eyes - don't know about the e-bay cheapies.

well it works on diffraction of light and all lenses (welding helmet or saftey glasses) will do it, as long as it is certifyed safe in the uk.

you will get eye strain, and this could develop into something in later life, but there is no way of knowing if you are or are not going to get it

so allways be wear glasses

Must be different to mine its goes light when charged You sure yours has got a lens it it mate

Seriously lens is dark, clears when powered - darkens when it see the arc otherwise all modern welding bods would be blind

I got my cheapy mask on Ebay absolutly fab no problems with it at all seen it retail for nearly three time the price
