helmets for mig

Morning, I've got a Rtech mig welder and still very much on the learning ladder. When I got the machine I bought with it, one of their cheap helmets which probably was a big mistake. I think at the moment they're doing one of their 10% off everything so I guess it would be a good time to get a better one!
they have quite an array of different ones, so, bearing in mind I'm an 87 year young pensioner so probably couldn't afford the very best I would very much appreciate any guidance from the experienced as to which one would should I being looking to get. I would like to be able to see the weld better as I'm laying it down if that's possible

Only the ones with flames on them make you a better welder.
The rest, just a waste of time.

Good lighting onto the work area is a big plus what ever helmet yo have or get.
I take it the one you have is auto darkning ? If so make sure you have it set correctly, as in the shade value. Also a fresh outer lens protector from time to time helps. If you are a glasses warer you can get what is called a "cheeter" lens. This fits inside and replaces your glasses but then when you lid your lid you don't have your glasses ! I prefer just to use my glasses.
If you helmet is a cheep one that will become stuck in a corner if you get a new one, before you rush out and buy the new one consider fitting it with an led light or two. There should be several post in the forum with pics of how members have done this.
The above is to try and save you a few bob.

Another option. Get yourself down to a local cheep jack shop (pound shop) and get some of these.

I’ve got a spotlight I can move and direct at my work. I may try some spotlights strapped to the helmet.
The best mod I did was to stop light getting into the back of the helmet. Attaching a hood on the back of the helmet with Velcro improved my ability to see a weld pool no end.

My 1st was one of those - flames AND mostly naked ladies. I used to have to turn my head and peer through a corner of the screen to see anything. I'm sure it made me a much better welder!

I found using a true colour helmet made it easier to see what I was doing. I bought the cheap Ginour one from Amazon, but they dont seem to be available at the moment. But similar ones are around for not too much money.
