Help I have a MIG 802 and can't find out who made it

I have a MIG 802 mig welder that I acquired from a friend that found it somewhere.

It is a european voltage welder set up for single phase 220 or 2 phase 380. I live in the US and need to convert it to us 2 phase 220.

I am not electrically gifted so finding a US 220 transformer will be a challenge for me because I cannot find the company that made it. With my luck they are not in business any more. It has italian and german components in it. So it is not some Chinese piece of crap

It has a Binzell Geisen (sp) torch I contacted them and they don't have any idea who they provided the torch to.

To complicate matters more it is also missing the heat range switch which by the picture would appear to have 6 positions with the last position being for spot welding. The person that took it apart marked the taps for the switch but the switch is no longer here.

Any help or ideas would be most appreciated

I have more pics available and will try to answer questions as best as I can

Looks to be Italian
(if only because the labels use Italian first). Maybe Cebora?

Some of the folk here are very familiar with those machines and should be along shortly!

Hi Jamie, I'm not certain but that could be a Telwin, it sort of looks a bit familiar. It's quite an old machine by the look of it so you probably won't be able to get parts for it. Regarding the switch, I'd imagine any 6 way rotary switch could be made to fit with a bit of fettling. Is it really worth the hassle of changing the transformer? It sounds like a lot of messing about to get it up and running, it might pay you to look for another that will connect straight to your supply.

I reckon Fingers is right, could very well be a cebora, the front panel legends look familiar.

I appreciate the fast responses thanks to all! I looked on Ceboras' site and wasn't able to make the view past products search link work so i can't say if it is made by them. I also looked on Telwins' site and couldn't make their search for products work either. I will email them both this evening.

As far as a lot of "Fettling" as Wozzaaah put it I don't mind a bit of work if the machine was something decent to begin with.

I am on a limited budget so buying a new machine is out for awhile that is why i was hoping to make this one work.

The feedback here is that Cebora are good machines (at least, as I read it!). Worthwhile fixing it up if it doesn't cost too much.

Well hopefully that is who built it then. I emailed both Cebora and Telwin and will wait and see if anyone gets back with me

A schematic is really all I need to know where things go on the 6 position heat range switch and know what amperage transformer I need to get to replace the current one

If you have 220 volts accross two phases at 180 degrees then it should work if you connect phase 1 to live (line) and the other phase to neutral (return), with the welder set up for 220 volts single phase. European colour code is brown for line, blue for neutral and green/yellow for earth.

Check that the mains switch is two pole, and that the earth wire is well connected to the chassis of the machine.

This is assuming I understand the U.S. mains system!

220 is 220

US is single-phase 220. More commonly called split-phase. You have 2, 110v feeds. If you use both lines, it is 220 single phase.

There is no need to change the transformer. It will work fine on US 220V. Just connect the two power lines to a 220V outlet (and a separate ground.)

It may refer to "line" and "neutral" and ground. Us has line1, Line2 neutral and ground. The two power wires go to the line1/line2.

If you are uncomfortable wireing a 220V outlet, have an electrician wire a dryer outlet in the garage. He can put the same plug on the welder.

This is exciting!...... but I am limited in my electrical knowledge I can follow a schematic if I had one soooooo.......

Can you tell by looking at the transformer in the picture that I posted what, if any changes I need to make in the connections

or could I just change the end on the cord so that both wires other than the ground are live 110 and ground?

The plug will need to be wired to 220, not 110. That is two 110V circuits on opposite phases. You will need an outlet wired for 220V (requires a double 20A circuit breaker.)

I cant tell from the pic which wires are the input lines. The plate on the back says it is 220V, it does not mention 380.

Normally for 220/240/380 there are two sets of jumpers in this type of design. The control transformer will have a set of jumpers and the main transformer will also have a set of jumpers. It looks like the main transformer is 220V only. They probably use a generic control transformer that supports other voltages in other models.

BTW, US calls it "220 and 110" but it is usually 240 and 120. 240 is within the tolerace most 220V devices are designed for.

The power cord will have 3 wires, 1 will go to the case. The other two are the power leads. Those will go to the two 220V power lines.

Do you have a dryer in the garage? The outlet can be used if needed. Otherwise you will have to add another 220V outlet. The best to use is a 220V NEMA twist-lock as the plug is easy to plug/remove and it won't pull out. Most dryer-type plugs are not designed for plugging in/out often (although it will work fine.)

Do you have someone who can wire a 220V outlet for you? It is not difficult but depends on local codes. If you have a garage with open studs, it is trivial. Otherwise you will have to run conduit as romex is only for inside walls.

Your breaker panel is in the garage? If so, that makes it a lot easier.

I have a 220 or more correctly 240 outlet for my tig and stick welder
in my shop that I can get power from I just need to get a new plug for the end of the wires that are currently being used that fits my present outlet

Cebora are usually excellent with spare parts back-up (UK importer at least) but that is such an old model you will be lucky

I talked to a company here in the US that services Cebora and they think it is not a Cebora they think it may be a Simmer (not sure how that is spelled can't find anything about them)
They said they will contact them at the end of the month seems the whole country of Italy is on vacation this month.
