Help needed!!

Hi there guys,

Brand new to the forum and was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction,
I am currently serving in the British army and have been for the last 12 years. Am 31 and thinking of going down a different path!
I am a welder in the REME and have City and Guilds level 3 in sheet metal work, fabrication and welding but looking for a job on the oil rigs.
I was wondering if anyone can give me any advice and tell me if my quals would carry any weight towards getting a job offshore.

Any advice would be amazing.

I am still very new to this forum myself and can't really comment on this from the welding side (re: qualifications etc.).

However I do work offshore (non welding role) and have just got back from a NS Rig. The first area you will need to look into is the relative offshore tickets and these are very much dependant on the offshore sectors your looking to work in (i.e. norwegian / UK waters etc.) and there are more than just the BOSIET aka offshore survival course, although the two fundermental courses are the BOSIET and the MIST courses (these are the minimum legal docs required to allow you to set foot on a rig before the relative role based qualifications).

I would strongly look around at the market before you spend any money on the courses though, in my job if you are applying for a position offshore and believe you need to self fund these courses you will probably not get it anyway. I have seen many people waste alot of money and never end up getting a job. Any good organisations that are serious about employing you will pay for these courses for you.

I am in the Navy and have been for about 19 1/2 years before that I did a 4 year welding apprenticeship building the same submarines I now serve on. I would think the Rigs would like ASME 9 qualified guys but you will probably have to contact them to confirm that. I presume your welding experience is probably more structural than pipe? There must be some offshore guys on here who can advise you though.
