Help, newbe what a crack

Hi, new to this dark art of painting. i am restoring a 1974 triple Kawasaki. was quoted £400 + decals for tank and side panels. sorry not the budget for this so decided to try myself as i am not after concourse finish.
I have a 150 L compressor
1.4 nozzle gravity fed gun
this is blow for blow what i have done, don't laugh

• Sand off all old paint
• Fill dents
• Sand off filler
• Prime with Halfords grey primer
• Two coats filler spray
• 600 sand
• Two coats filler spray
• 1200 sand
• Prime with Halfords grey primer
• Wet sand 2000
• Clean with tack cloth
• Spray base coat (pic 1)
• 10-15 mins second coat base coat
• 48 hrs wet sand 2000
• Clean tack cloth
• Spray base coat
• 10-15 mins second coat base coat
• Wet sand 2000
• Clean tack cloth
• Spray 1K clear (pic 2)
• 10 mins 2nd coat clear
• 10 mins 3rd coat clear
• 24hrs later Spray 1K clear 4th
• 10 mins 5th coat clear
• 10 mins 6th coat clear
• 48 hours wet sand 2000 cos of orange peel
• Looked ok but then 2 or 3 days later cracks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

iwas told to use 50% thinners and 50% paint

they look like the clear is shrinking ******
any ideas why and how to avoid this next time

Probably don't put so many coats on.

I'd say you put too much primer and too much clear on. Also, you shouldn't sand base coat. It's not a build coat, just enough to colour. You also went too fine grit on your sanding, you shouldn't go any finer than P800 or the adhesion won't be there.

Unfortunately the fix is to sand it all off back to your filler primer, maybe even as far back as the first grey primer layer. Get down to that and finish with P600. Then 2 or 3 layers basecoat then after 30 mins or so 3 or 4 layers of clear.

Did you thin the basecoat with proper basecoat thinners at 1:1?

Yes proper thinners 1:1.
I was told to sand the colour to get a flat finish before clear. I think he called it colour sanding.
so do I not touch the base coat (burgundy)?
thanks for the advise. i will start rubbing down the bits now to the grey primer.

Basecoat should never be sanded (except the odd little de-nib), especially metallics and pearls. Don't ask that man for advice any more!

no these are the steel bits. i did use etch for the plastic but same result
I thought the guy who is selling the paint and has done for years should know, you live and learn

You need plastic primer for plastic. Etch won't do it.

yes i used the plastic primer from Halfords.(grey)
so Ok for the future

base coat (colour) two coats with 10-20 mins in between
then two or three coats of clear after another 10-20 mins
is that OK?
do I buff the clear or sand or dont touch

you can sand and buff the clear once its cured if you want to

get away from Halfords... find a professional paint supplier who can give you the correct paints and advice
