Help please

I have just picked this petrol compressor up

I saw it running before I bought it but I'd like to give a quick once over before I start using it, change oil and sparky for the motor and the oil for the piston too.

I've only ever had a lidl compressor so after some advice please, the motor is easy, there's loads of info about the Honda CG160 so that's not a problem but I have not idea what kind of oil to go for for the compression cylinder, any ideas?

Also, on the Lidl compressor there is a little pull switch on the regulator which you can pull to release pressure from them compressor then a bolt on the underside which you can undo to let any water out of the tank.

This also has a tap on the underside for water release but I'm not sure about releasing the pressure from the tank, any ideas?

The compressor pump appears to be a Chinook K17?

Also, I know the tap at the back (which is closed in the picture below) should be opened for easy start when starting the compressor particularly from cold, there is a sticker on the back saying so

But would any of these be a pressure release bolt?

In the absence of any other data I would use SAE30 compressor oil in the pump.

That brass contraption looks like an unloader valve, when the tank reaches the cut-off pressure it just dumps excess air from the pump to atmosphere.

Use the drain plug at the bottom to depressurise the tank at the end of the day if you want to.

I was worried about undoing the tap underneath with it pressurised, worried that it might be forced undone once I've started it off.

I take it that I should undo the tap until I hear the hissing and then stop undoing it until the hissing has stopped.

I'm off to Machine Mart to get a new water catcher and pressure gauge (they got damaged while bringing it back home), they both currently show between 2 and 3 bar of pressure and they have been removed from the tank.

Thinking about it, I think the pressure gauge might be the relief valve? Just looking at it now it has a bolt on top with a hole in it pic below (I didn't notice this before)

Yes, That's an 11 bar safety valve. It blows of at 11 bar, which is 1 bar above the normal (10 bar) maximum working pressure. The unloader valve mentioned previously blows off at 10 bar, or less, depending on how you set it.

The drain tap is usually a captive device, i.e. it can't fly apart when you undo it. May be worth checking with no air in the tank though!

I close mine once the water has stopped coming out. I usually leave my tank pressurised all the time.

Thank you, will double check but I'm sure the drain tap under the tank does come all the way out which is why I was worried about it.

Nice to know about the saftey valve too.

It's wasted on me this compressor it was just the right price at the right time, there will only be a handfull of jobs a year that I need it on, but it's better to need it and have it than need it and not have it.

I'm going to use this to drive a home made blast cabinet because I need to strip my old bike that has lived in a mixture of a damp garage and outside for a couple of years

I might even have a go at the fairings and tank when it's done.
