Help!

First of all apologies for the quality of the photo!
Hopefully you can see the problem I have. I'm painting a vintage tractor and
been getting on fine until today. Using 2k paint (with all the right safety measures) and a sealey s701g paint gun. There was no wind and i used a tack cloth etc before starting. Have moisture trap etc but I have a paint finish which looks rough as hell, any ideas what might be the cause? I did think as I went on that the gun was starting to sputter, could that be the problem and what do I do to solve it?

bits of dirt /dust in it ...either from the pot or floating about in the air etc

next time use fine paper filters to filter the paint into the gun , wet down as much of the work area as you can , and hang up plastic sheets to cover any roof areas that might hold dust , give the work peice a good high pressure dust off when you use the tack tag

Try tightening the nut that holds the needle packing a little bit if it is spluttering but that does not look like the cause of your problem. Get some pot filters and also damp the floor down as it looks like dust in the air.

Thanks for the replies. Should have added that I do filter the paint prior to it going in the gun, it was also flatted down really smooth and I have the area surrounded by plastic sheets, that's why I'm gutted with the result. I know it looks like dirt but i dont see how it can be with everything I've done. I will check the nut that holds the packing needle, for tightness just in case.

a loose nut making the gun spit wont create the bits in it ...must be coming from somewhere

did you wear a paper suit? you really will have to be super clean to get nice results , you even get dirt nibs in a pukka spray oven so dont be too sad if its in your shed

Yes, paper suit as well. Just don't understand it because I did a set of wheels last week which turned out really well and haven't changed anything since then. I tend to think its something with the spray gun as it seemed to be sputtering but not sure what could be causing that.

The bigger blobby bits might be 'spits', loose nozzle can also cause it. You should see/feel it though. Does look like dust as well. Have you got a strong light, like a halogen worklight or something? Shows up flying mank well.
Ceiling sheeted?

Gun blast can suck up dust etc if near floor or other things that might hold mank, even paint stands or whatever.
Strongish winds outside can throw up stuff off the floor - damping down helps.

was the gun super clean..ive had the odd bit of crud come out when it wasnt that clean behind the nozzle

The panel is just over a meter off the ground. The light is just a fluorescent strip light. It wasn't windy on the day but now Beginning to think its maybe dirt in the gun so will give it another good clean before trying again.

Cant agree more with Steveo.Tis possible to get bits in the gun but it is more likely to block the fluid tip. The movement of air behind the gun is quite dramatic and will stir anything up off the floor. 2k is also magnetic to dust through static as opposed to celly where the dust just settles. You can never spend enough time de dusting and damping down. That includes the air fed and airline etc.

im with stevo & norsa defo looks like dust, whats above the panel ? dusty beams by any chance, ive never seen results like that from gun faults
