Henry Hoover Motor

Father gave me his Henry Hoover at the weekend ... well I say gave
"I've got something for you *hands me Henry* lots of smoke came out last time I used it, can you buy and fit a new motor for me"

It's an old one Model HVR200, switch on the side and an outlet for powered brush.
He wants a genuine motor reckoned about £60 .... I can't find much in the way of genuine motors, anyone fitted a compatible thats proved okay?
Sticker on top says 900W
sticker on side says 'New 1000W', all motors I've seen say 1200 or 1400W

If I can find a spare motor the actual swapping seems easy enough.

If it fits and the wiring is big enough then more watts is more better.

I fitted a clone and it did give out a puff of smoke when I was using it for days on my blast cabinet. It turned out to be ok, it just had a coughing fit because of all the dust I made it swallow. The clone motors seem to work ok and the single speed ones don't seem to suffer the electronic problems of two speed.

Just be careful of the spade connectors on the motor. some motors have multiple connectors that go nowhere and you may find it doesn't work. You will have connected to a dead one. It's worth just metering across the terminals on the brushes for continuity, just in case.

Just opened up the case (it really could do with a vacuum out ) and found this staring at me.
I'm guessing this is probably the cause of the smoke. From googling it's just suppressor stuff so could I just cut it off and try switching it on. It should run without just to test if the motor is okay?

The capacitor is there to suppress interference. The motor will still run, as a test, with the capacitor removed, but it will affect radio and TV reception. Fit a cap as soon as possible, as it also reduces arcing at the brushes, reducing their wear rate, and also that of the commutator.

Okay, cleaned up inside, snipped off the suppressor, and put it back together.
Seems to run fine without it, no smoke or smells, so I'm guessing the motor is fine.
I'll order a new suppressor.

EDIT: Okay, so what's the difference between a suppressor/capacitor for £4 on Ebay up to £40 at a 'spares' specialist ????

Seems to have the same markings/numbers on it, so I've gone cheap.
Fathers nearly 80 so it does not have to last anywhere near as long as the original

Well the part arrived lunch time (not bad for the cheapest option) and i duly soldered it into place, put it all back together and prepared to bask in the glory of a cheap, simple fix.
Turned it on and nothing. No noise, smoke or smell

Took it apart and removed the new suppressor, still nothing. Popped open the switch, all fine and dandy, checked the power connections on the wiper assembly in the lid, all okay, disconnected the motor, can't see anything wrong, no burning etc..
Fiddled and faffed for an hour or so, and got a short blip out of it once. Like a spilt second of motor then nothing, again no smell or smoke.

So new motor after all ?? It it worth trying to change the brushes first? if indeed they are replaceable in this old 1987 motor.

A very common fault is where people use the power lead to drag the cleaner around. This breaks a conductor usually at or near where it's restrained on the drum. Ten minutes and I had a working two speed Henry.

I scored 2 out of a skip one a flex break the other a damaged hose then got another . supposed to be smell of burning wasn't the motor it was summat picked up in the paper bag that stunk so cleaners wouldnt use it . I just said it had had it and took it home class

And the prize (if there were one) goes to Seadog.

Started checking continuity after finding the brushes had loads of meat on them and were in good nick.
Nothing amiss inside, but something wrong with the live in the lead.
Checked it over for signs of damage and found this just at the point it enters the drum restraint.



Cut 8 inches off the end and opened it up to find this



Remade the connections and all is well with Henry again. I suppose he just did not like being dismantled. Oh well.

Dunno about the fit in a Henry, but my ancient Nilfisk (G90) accomodated a Chinese Dyson clone motor with a bit of packing. Still working fine after a few years.
