Hi all!
Dean from Norwich UK here!
So, I've been trying to learn to weld on and off for the last year (although not much over the summer!), with varying and inconsistent levels of success! Got a Murex 150 plant at the moment that's quite pleasant - even better now I've got the right sized nib bit on it and the wire isn't trying to push through a hole that's too small!
Anyway, the reason I've been learning is because I'm building a custom motorbike and hope to do a lot more over time. This has brought me to try TIG, prettier and more of a potential to seal on thinner metal like tanks I suspect - regardless, I've tried the tank with 18 gauge steel and had a nightmare and never got it to seal.
Now I've got the little TIG unit going, I'm loving it again and just started with practicing, now I realise it's all about the clean materials to start with, but this is one of my first attempts...
and a rather pitiful...
I've found so far that 1" tube is difficult for 2 reasons, 1) it's a pig to notch the tube with a grinder, and more importantly to this, getting fully round it is a mare - the flats on the 'sides' no probs (other than me being crap), but 'in' the 90 degree joint is a skill that's I think held for superstars, wizards, and those that can fire lasers from their eyeballs.
Finally, since tigging, every session (only been 3 now) I have a hellish skullache afterwards. I thought it was lack of 'air' in the garage, but had the door open last night and still got it - putting this down to a cheapy ebay flamey (xmas pressie) auto darkening lid.
Anyway, I look forward to searching the forum for all sorts of hints and tips, and hopefully doing some proper learning!
And if anyone is in Norwich and fancies a beer while they teach a dullard like me some tips and tricks that would be even better! LOL
