Hi everyone... joined a week ago, but I'm bored at work, so thought i'd introduce myself.

Im an engineering/computer science student in Perth, Western Australia. Halfway through my degree. Been lurking on here for about a year now, finally joined up. I love the forum. And the 'practical' sections. Everyone is so helpful and friendly!

I've been welding (stick) since I was about 10, and I've had my mig for nearly a year now. Also done some Oxy/propane brazing for a couple of years.

I've got: a (very) cheap 'Ozito' brand stick welder, Oxy/propane brazing/cutting setup and my new baby, the Lincoln PowerMIG 180C.

My main project at the moment is a 1970 Ford Capri. Got it for $100, so its in bad shape! Doesnt run, full of rot. It had a 4cyl 1600, but I'm going to convert it to a 302 Windsor with EFI. Should be interesting ! I'd love to know if anyone has any experience with the conversion? Or Capri's in general?

Hi Stevo. Thanks for the welcome!

When I say "since 10", what I really mean is: when I was 10, my dad asked one of his friends to let me have a go with his stick welder for a few hours a week. Very well supervised! This guy had been a professional welder. Very, very knowledgable man.

He showed me how to run a bead, keep the right distance. I learnt to stick bits of metal together (butt welds only). And he talked about preparing joints for welding, with Vs etc. Taught me how to weld safely, explained the dangers.

I think it was a really good experience all up! Gave me a taste for hot metal !

Then I didnt weld at all for a few years, then did some oxy stuff. But when we got our cheapo arc set a couple of years ago, it all came right back! Very quickly got the hang of it again. I'd highly recommend it to all of you with young'ns... teach em to weld early!!!

I'd never heard of a Ford Capri 'till last year. (bit young). But I saw this one sitting in a driveway around the corner and just fell in love with its lines! Incredibly sexy cars I reckon! Only the mk1's mind you!

Can'nt stand the mk2s and mk3s. And dont get me started on the model model that came out in the 80's/90's! Yuk! (but thats just me I guess)

Good luck with your Crappi doppler - they were always a good straight-line laugh with a decent engine in them, a bit tricky on corners though.

Hi doppler I had a stick welder for my 10th birthday too, It never did me any harm and I've still got it!!

When I was 10 I used to have ******* contests with christene from next door, could beat her easily my second car was a capri 1600GT 1971 mk! they were the best looking IMHO. have fun with it.

Hahaha! Woody and Bill.... I think the metal fumes have gone to all of our heads over the years!

We must all be nuts to spend hours talking about sticking metal together... and loving it all!
