I'm a hobbyist, haven't seriously got into welding, but have temporarily owned a mig welder
(previously owned a good unit brand but let down by slight fault with feed wire which marred me really getting into it more)

(I've since bought a stick welder but its use is quite limited so in future might invest in a decent MIG)

Joined as I'm looking for a bit of help, its not really directly welding related but hey ho.

I've got a turbo from salvage, good usable but its totally coked up on the manifold and just won't seperate

I actually joined as I thought to give me some ideas or someone might be relatively local and with welding will have access to oxy/acetylene for welding so I could get this thing hot to split ?

Hi Thanks, more info I'm in the Kettering area and more than happy to pay/donate for anyone who can help led some hand (obviously not to the degree that might as well refurb the turbo though lol)

As it stands I'd just as well either scrap this turbo, or just put in exchange for a new unit but you get bugger all back so I was thinking given the fins and play on the turbo seem nice / well within tolerance to just have it spare and just decoke and keep as emergency spare turbo ?

Alternatively I could just chuck it somewhere to be serviced but I don't know one from another and heard some horror stories and actually also wanted to learn something by trying to taking it apart at least. The one down the road from me wanted circa £400. The turbo cost me a while back around £150 which I thought was cheap but didn't realise I'd have so much problem with servicing.
But just can't get it apart! Common problem I think with turbos the manifolds can be stubborn when they've been in a few miles.

I've tried trying to smack the thing open on the casting (tried even using a large masonry style chisel to leverage), and for heat only have propane, and tried liberal amount of rust dispersing spray etc. Doesn't seem to budge a MM.
Really come to the conclusion this is a job for application of heat, would be great if I actually had access to anything!

Hmm, I've heard that, not sure how good it would be for the oven though ( as we'd be eating from it at a later date lol ) ? Or the turbo !

I was thinking the targetted heat would be better as the manifold would expand all around but not in the middle bit so much and then would practically fall of the chra bit. I guess potentially that might happen to some degree in the oven but with the fan assist sure it wouldn't be quite the same though.

This thing is a PD130 / GT1759VA which is the Garrett equivalent of the KKK turbo I already have on my car
( which hasn't failed yet but has done 130K ).

I've heard of people using Mr Muscle with the turbo in the car but stretching to actually putting into the oven to actually achieve the same affect seems a bit much !

welcome to the forum, have you tried a local garage, i often find there is usually someone who will do it for some beer tokens if you tell them you just need it heated to split.

I've read on a car forum of which I'm a member of others using it for inlet manifolds which are gunged up with success, might be worth a go. Proceed at your own risk 'though.....
