Hi from a new member

As you can probably guess my name is Mark. I work in a fabrication company, not a plater as such but working towards that. I previously worked as a technician in the building and engineering section of a college.

I use oxy-propane cutting regularly, mig and occasionally plasma cutting. I also have a mig and a DC mma/tig inverter at home.

Welcome, Mark. Sounds like you're a pro - I'm just getting going again after a few decades out. Not sure what a plasma cutter is, but one day.....

Nah not really a pro Dave. I started out as a mechanic after school but that was in the early days of Youth Training Schemes and my placements never panned out. Went into a dead end factory job after that and stuck at it (for too long) seeing as it was paying the bills but then came to my senses and quit. Went to the local college to do welding, did NVQ1 and half way through level 2 I was offered a job there and dropped off the course, I worked there until the college was shut down a couple of years later

Started at my current job as a labourer but I was also doing some assembly/welding jobs. I was making tail lifts for the back of lorries for a while. They have decided I could be better utilised doing more technical jobs rather than endless grinding so I'm now doing other stuff.

A plasma cutter uses an electrical arc to superheat compressed air into a plasma which comes out in a concentrated stream to cut through metal.
