hi guys my names andrew, thought i would join as im the procses of going to college to study welding then hopfully do it as a carrer so just looking for information and tips and this seems to be one of the best welding forums.

hopeing to work with gym equipment, and was wondering if theres any guys on hear that do that?

You will also pass with full colours for observation, this is the best welders forum.

If you mean manufacturing gym equipment, I am sure there will be a market for individual designs etc, for the common stuff you are up against mass manufacture, cheap imports and companys that buy that much steel they get it at a fraction of the cost the average buyer does, hence hard to compete with prices.

A decent line for earning while learning is ornamental steelwork, gates, railings etc, minimum equipment required and a few nice pieces sold tend to market themselves for repeat orders.

Welcome Andrew. As a service engineer I was looking for work aprox 5 years back and did see a company in south Bristol that did installations and maintenance of gym equipment. Sorry don't recall there name I think they were based in Cater road Bishopsworth Bristol. If I guess right I take it you frequent the gym, if so look at the equiment there and see who makes and or maintaines it. Don't be put off if the company is miles away / different country! Service engineers are usually dotted around the country for most service companys. ps I ended up working on medical equipment. Don't think I would have had the body for workINs the gym never mind workOUTs

thanks for the reply, haha yea ive been looking around for welding forums and this one does seem to be the best and by a long way tbh.

im looking into going into more of the strongman and powerlifting stuff maybe specialist strength equipment rather than ur standard comerical gym equipment.

regarding my college course, what kind of course would u recomend? i think MIG is the main one used in gym equipment, but would u recomend learning the 4 main types of welding or just one?

hi mike thanks for the respsone. was that company in south bristol called gymratz?
ive got my eye on a company in frome so its abit of a journey but they do the exact stuff i wanna do. ive allready spoken to the owner and he says hes allways looking for good welders.
just need to get qualified now, finding information on the correct course to do is what im finding hardest atm.

My experience suggests the more you can do and skills you obtain, the more options you have in life, obviously the logistics of time, availability and expense may limit what welding skills you can aquire, MIG being the main one I should think but simply put..if you get the chance to learn others..grab it with both hands
