Hi there. I am semi- retired, an ex HGV / Plant mechanic with a motorbike project in hand, and presently living on the Isle of Skye. I was trained up during the 70s when MIG wasn't around and Arc and Gas was a bread n butter mechanics skill. I picked up MIG when I worked for an American oil explorator in Madagascar during the 80s, and TIG when working in the Sahara during the 90s. It has been interesting to see in my working life how welding has advanced and become safer over the decades due to lower amperages, use of gasses to shroud welds and more stringent health and safety regs and better equipment.
