I'm new to the forum, although I have been reading it for a while, it's really helpful!
I'm new to welding and was hoping to learn Mig welding.
I've just bought a second-hand Murex tradesmig 160 which I'm collecting tomorrow.
It doesn't have a torch and I'm anticipating it could have issues. Is there a way of doing some basic checks without a torch?
Can anyone confirm it takes a Euro torch?

from the pictures on the Murex Manual , I would say yes to Euro torch , the torch trigger starts the ball rolling so I dont think it will do much without one !

If it has a Euro connector,which i am sure it will have,at the connector on the machine short out the 2 torch switch pins this should bring jn all the functions.For safety reasons wear gloves when you carry out this action.Any probs get back to the forum

I'll do the basic checks on it and order a torch if it seems to be working okay.

It has the wiring diagram and so if you've got a multimeter and know a bit about electrics, it should save some detectivework. Unusually it has the circuit of the controller board, which can sometimes be a right pain.

Thanks for the link to the manuals, I think I'll be needing them, it's dead!
I only had a few minutes to test it, before I had to go to work tonight.
The switch lights up when it's turned on. I connected the pins in the Euro connector and the wire feed motor and fan don't operate and there's no voltage between the positive torch connector and the earth lead.
I didn't really have any time to look in depth.
Any suggestions? Relay or contactor perhaps?

Go at it systematically using the diagram and starting from the place the power comes in, checking fuses, switches and connections rather than guess. You don't have to have it powered on for continuity checking. The fan looks as if it runs off a 220V tap on the primary of the transformer which produces the low voltage for the controller board.

Anyway, this is getting a bit off topic for an introduction. If you can't get anywhere with it after trying a bit, why not start a new thread in the relevant section? You'll probably get more responses and there could well be someone who's gone through exactly the same process.
