Hello everyone, Im here because I bought a Vauxhall Chevette and Im going to restore it myself. Well, thats the plan anyway! Im new to welding... so new in fact that I dont even have a welder yet! Im hoping to buy one in the next few weeks. So, any advice or hints will be greatly appreciated! Oh, and be expecting some stupid questions!!!!

Hi Kev.

I learned to drive in a Chevette! It hadn't been serviced very well and didn't idle, so the trick at junctions was to put one foot on the clutch, the other on the throttle to keep the engine alive, and stop the car using the handbrake. I think it had a service before the driving test.

You don't see more than one a year these days so they must be getting rare. Good to hear you are planning to save one.

Most welders should work for what you want to do. It's worth reading through the buyers guide for pointers, and feel free to ask stupid questions (we like them because they are sometimes easier to answer).

Thanks Malcolm... I had a read through the buyers guide... helped a lot. Explained it in a language even I could understand!

The Chevette I have is actually driving, although I didnt drive it after I originally test drove it. I was amazed at how it started, handled and stopped for a 29 year old car! I think the retro car scene is making a bit of a come back over here or maybe its just that Im getting older!!!

Anyway, thanks for the advice... hope to buy something fairly soon, but Ill ask your opinions on whichever one I pick first.

What do you call a 29 year old Chavette..........Grandmother!!! Oh sorry Chevette! Yeah it was one of the first kinD of light nippy cars like the 128 Fiat type of thing. They rusted didn`t they, struts came through inner wings but a sporty drive.

To be honest now, I would have expected it to have rusted a lot more. I mean, I`ve seen cars only a few years old with bits falling off....... They just dont make em like the used to!!
