Hello, just introducing myself.

I`m a blacksmith from Devon, interested in most forms of welding: gas, tig, arc, forge...

I`ll be on the lookout soon for a tig/arc inverter, not sure whether I`ll go AC/DC or just DC - wouldn`t mind having the aluminium capability, but i`m not sure I`d use it....

Anyway, not here to pick your brains just yet, just to say hello!

Good to see another one from Devon, keeps us on a par with that lot from Wiltshire and Ireland

Blacksmithing is an interest to a lot of us on here, a few photos of your creations would be most welcome.

As to MIG, well..... I suppose I`m just a little contrary. Firstly, I suppose, I'm interested in forge welding - I think you should be able to do anything with a forge, hammer and anvil (and some anhydrous borax). Sometimes though this just isn`t convenient - the arc is, turn it on, set the amps, stick a rod in..... The gas and TIG appeal for the skill they require, or at least the steady hand.

Most probably comes down though to the fact that I learnt to weld with arc (on an Oxford). nothing against MIG really, ideal if your welding all day, but I only weld once or twice a week usually.

What sort of finish or coating do you use on the indoor work.

Various. After forging a wire brush to remove oxides/scale, then warm it and apply pure beeswax. Sometimes I use a clear lacquer (but I don`t trust it as much). Sometimes I use lacquer & then a wax - doesn`t seem to affect the lacquer. If anyones got any other suggestions I`m ready to listen!

The Arbour is two part etch primer & Micaceous iron.
