Hot zinc spray setup - costs

Hi. I’ve had a few parts hot zinc sprayed over the last year or so and it’s something I’m coming to rely on prior to powder coating.

dependant on price I might be able to justify the kit for the workshop. My current contact does it as a foreigner at work so that won’t last forever.

does anyone happen to know the costs of a simple entry-level setup? I’ve approached Metallisation and a couple of other companies but yet to hear back.

I’d obviously be happy with used, refurbished kit too.

Metco kit seems to pop up used every now and again.

looking back at past invoices, I’d guess I could justify £500-£1000 if I could get a reliable system but I have the feeling that this may be way short of the mark. Failing that I’ll continue paying for it to be done.

Answered my own query here, one of the firms came back to me today and a basic setup similar to the one lined above was about 10x the amount I had hoped. Shame as aside from the gun itself, the rest of the setup seems to be relatively standard valves and hoses. I'll just stick with outsourcing it unless we ever get to the point where manufacturers in china start selling similar kit.

what about thermal spray aluminum, used a lot for petrochem pipework, have no idea of prices, but might give you another solution, especially if it's its for small batch runs...

probably too expensive compared to zinc, but.....

I’ve wondered how much a setup would be and if it could do car parts.

might be worth having a run round some of the industrial estates in Aberdeen, at the pipe fab companies, it's used a lot offshore.... car parts might be the sort of the wee homer job the boys would like.... especially as it looks like here's a fair bit of waste getting it set up properly for a run of pipe..

Im out of things nowadays but 10 years ago I used to see loads of the old oxy acet stuff and even the double wire "mig" types laying about collecting dust. I think most were bought with good intentions but the results arent as good as expected....unless its automated.
Metco, Metallisation, Eutectic Castolin are the common ones.........keep looking for second hand

I might have something you might be interested in METCO wise I will take some pics and get back to you tonight

What I have sat in the shelving is a complete Metco flame spray kit comprising of metal case or box, 3 guns. Gas and oxygen gauges complete with pipes, gas and air flow meters, instruction manual with how to service and repair section, metallizing manual, oceans of spares, to much to mentions individually but there are drive wheels, drive cogs, nozzles, nozzle caps seals mostly brand new, there are some tools in there there are some many spares they would probably last me a life time. I bought it from a shot blasting galvanizing business that closed down a couple years ago and it has sat in the shelving ever since. The only thing I regretted not buying at the time was the wire stand,

now I know what it was, easy enough to make though. I intended to use it along side my blasting business my intention is or was to mount it all on this gas bottle trolley but as yet not got round to it. It maybe a good time for me to part with it considering I have spent quite a bit on the digger I just bought. I will make a listing in for sale section if anyone is interested in the lot, as you know there not cheap though

Is hot zinc sprayed just another form of galvanising? Same outcome, different process as dipping?
Obviously the dipping gets all nooks and crannies that are inaccessible to the sprayed form?

Hot spraying really needs a coarse grit blasted surface to get the adhesion with zinc. Imagine each little tiny droplet splats on to the surface and previous droplets to form a mechanical bond, unlike hot dip galvanising where the surface is wetted by the zinc like soldering.
