Pic nicked from the internet shows a common layout for dual voltage motor connections and how they're wired up (delta vs star/wye). If the terminals of your motor are layed out and/or labelled differently to the nice simple style with jumper bars post a decent pic and someone will explain how to change things so it'll run from 230V 3 phase

Took the cover off the end of the motor and there it was all written down for me!!
Got another motor here which I've posted a pic of
I get I just take the 2 bars off and lay them across but where does the third terminal go to??
Also do I need a specific size phase inverter /how hard are they to wire in

For use in a drill press which doesn't need much start up torque, you probably only need a single capacitor to run off single phase.
Others will chip in regarding capacitor size, but basically it is wired in parallel with one winding (so say U1 V1) with 240 applied U1 W1 for one direction, or V1 W1 for the other direction. Capacitor needs to be rated at least 380v AC preferably oil filled paper.

Friend of mine swears by these, he buys his direct from china at silly low prices. Not sure on the size you require but the add has a wiring diagram

So your saying I could get by just using a capacitor??
But if I used a phase inverter I would get reverse and variable speed? ?
Not to bothered about this as the drill goes down to 80 rpm as it has a 2 speed gearbox
Any idea what size capacitor I need?
The data plate is barely legible is a problem!

Had a good read through that and it's helped a lot!

This drill is going to be set at a slowish speed as I already have a smaller drill for up to about 10mm
Anyone have any reports on the reliability of these cheap inverters??

Many many people using them, like i say pal of mine swears by them, and substansially cheaper than a straight or rotary convertor. Only down side i can see is ineffect you bypass all the controls and microswitches on your machine.
Not sure but i think the motor runs faster using a vfd too.

As well as the ability to vary the speed the other useful features are things like ramp up and ramp down, torque limiting (depending on model, maybe not on the cheaper ones) etc which can give the mechanicals an easier time. Probably not strictly necessary but nice to have..
I don't have any experience with those particular inverters but in general inverters are widely used in industry, they are very much tried and tested technology nowadays.

I have to agree with everyone above ! I have one for my lathe and it is nearly identical to the one linked above in addjunkies post, it was sat in my garage for over a year before being used, and not for my lathe in the end but for a hoofing water pump. They are actually not that difficult to set up and have soooo many uses. Definitely get my vote!
