Need a bit of advice on protecting 304l stainless. Friend has a roof rack on his van and it has started to go rusty. is there anything i can do to to stop it happening? ie gel products etc
hey! u sure its def 304?!.... its not very often u would see 304 rusting?!.. try sticking a magnet on it! if the magnet takes then the probability is that its a lesser grade!
^^ That was my first thought, iron contamination from fabrication or stuff that's been lashed to it etc. Be worth waving a magnet at it though unless positive it was made from 304
Are you certain it's 304L, rich74310? Not chromed steel..?
Stainless often has a slight straw'ish patina due to the nickel content. It can often be mistaken for chromed (which tends to be more silver coloured). Differences in the underlying surface finish are also ascertainable, but it's hard to describe here in writing.
There will also be differences in the magnetic properties between the two; chromed steel has a definite magnetic permanence throughout the the materials ferrite structure, whereas; stainless may have areas where there can be a 'great amount' to none (depending on the processes it has been through).
Whereabouts is the rust on the roof-rack? Rust spots on the corner bends? Appearing on top of the transverse rails due to scratches & gouges?
Its defo 304l stainless it was printed on the tubes. I brushed the welds up with what i thought was a good stainless brush but bussiness partner forgot to tell me he had used it on mild steel so the stainless is contaminated.
what can i do. ive ordered some pickling paste.anything else?
umm contaminated stainless is hard 2 clean! though if uve just rubbed it with a hand held wire brush and not a drill/grinder driven 1 then the chances are that there are no deep areas of penitration! best bet would be a good old scotch pad some WD40 and a good dose of elbow grease!!
