How do i test this for pin holes

Ok going on my thread for swaping over a motor and compressor on my old air tank

I wanted the old metal bracket off the old tank that was knackard but before I slice it up I want to cheak its not just a thread weeping that can be fixed with some ptfe
(This I dout very much as the bloke is very good at what he does but they did need a bigger compressor and all the electrical needed redoing)

So might be a chance that there is some thing silly wrong and I can redo all the electitery stuff as only needs a new box and rewire

I've managed to block off a couple of the holes there's one in the 2nd metal that needs blocking off and 2 holes that feed the out put
Now I don't want to spend loads on this as it lightly to be knackard but don't mind a 10er

I was thinking filling with water then pressure the container up with air to test it

Will this knacker the pressure bit at the end with the adjuster on it if I do this ?

Or better ideas ?

Some little bsp blanking plugs will be cheap.
Cheaper than replacing a regulator that's got a load of rust flakes and oil stuck in it.

First Id stick a bore camera in it to get an idea of rust. Its very difficult to get a horizontal tank completely empty of water, so if its old, its likely to be bad.

Second is to fill with water and use a hydrostatic (water) presure tester. Water does not compress, so there is no spring energy if some part were to fail. They can be quite cheap..

Please dont use compressed air to test it.

If you have another compressor fill it with air and go round it with some soapy water in a sprayer.
I use this to seal my compressor fittings

If the receiver's an unknown, it's a Very Good Idea to pressure test it, to well above the pressure you'll be using it at - fill with water and fudge up an adaptor for a pressure washer, have a gauge connected so you can watch to see what pressure it builds to (and stop before yu burst the seams) - always without air which will store enough energy to make your day very miserable if the receiver suddenly lets go.

No, that'll be 3/4" and 1/2". BSP are roughly 1/4" below the measured size IYSWIM.

Nope, those dimension refer to the bores. They are 1/2 and 3/4.

You need to test at 50% above the rated pressure.

A few psi of air in it and test with soapy water in a spray bottle will tell you of its got a hole.

Could do what we motorcyclists are having to do since they started adulterating petrol with ethanol... AFTER you've pressure tested with water (NOT AIR)

Take the big end plug out of the receiver, add a handful of nuts or similar and shake to loosen up the "crust", rinse and tip out the loose crud.
stick a sacrificial anode (piece of rebar, similar scrap iron or steel, NOT stainless or, if you're posh like me, graphite) wrapped in anti-slip dashboard mat through the hole, with the end poking out and clips to stop it dropping inside (this is important! If the charger + clip goes inthe water it'll dissolve...),
fill receiver with water and washing soda,
Attach + of a battery charger to the anode, - to the receiver, switch on, make sure bubbles are starting to form, and go away for the weekend.
Come back home, switch off and drain the receiver, rinse well with fresh water,
mix up 30% phosphoric acid, a few litres, pour in and slosh about for a few minutes, then roll so it covers at least the lower half for quarter hour or so,
Rinse again with fresh water,
drain dry thoroughly (hot air gun poked in the big bunghole, or similar - be sure it's really dry)
Can of Petseal/Por15 or similar tank sealer (or just a decent industrial enamel, as it's only air and traces of water to resist), slosh around so the entire inside's covered.
Wait for sealer to harden.

A cheap and cheerful plumbers test bucket from flea Bay will let you pressure test it safely, fill it with water, blank off all the holes and pump away (just make sure there's no air in it).

£15 for a really cheap test pump (dont blame me if it doesn't work though).

update had a lot to do today so realy not much time got to tool station and a few blanking plates and before went out for i filled the tank half filled with water and left it for a fw hours and there was no water on the floor when i got back

so i started cleaning it washed up nice

i did add just a small amount of air to the tank (prob only 2 seconds worth of air just to give it some pressure in side but still no leak thats as far as i got

i did #get a chance to wash out the inside to see how much of the rust i could get rid of and a lot came out or at least a lot of brown water if left it on its end to dry out and consider my next move

i did think i could scrape at the rust but the screw driver i thought would reach wont

in work they have some rebar i might borrow one on them and flatten out the rust and wash again

in all this i still also need to know the motor and compesser still works as it was hanging around for a few weeks and it had been moved a few times that i know of

screw to a piece of wood then desk to see if it runs or just blows a fuse i know its not testing it under pressuse but will test the motor running ?
