How to paint & prevent further rust, once treated?
Hi, guys i'm new to the forums I was actually meaning to join in order to find out what type of welder i should get, but joined today as i need some advice regarding rust prevention, as I recently found some rust on the underside of my car
Heres a link to rust that I've found on the underside of my car, near the right rear jacking point:
http://lifewithabmw.blogspot.com/2010/09/uh-oh-rust-in-chassis.html
Reading the above will explain what i've done so far, but to summarise:
1) Cleaned up rust with drill and wire brush, then dremel with smaller wire bursh
2) Applied Kurust, then Jenolite
3) Used Dremel some more with sanding tips this time
4) Painted over with Davids Zinc 182 primer
I stopped at step 4 cause its a temporary fix. This coming weekend I intend on removing this primer layer and going at it as best i can with my shot blaster, but after that I'm not sure in which order to apply different products??
A few pics from my blog, more and larger versions there.
So after shot blasting should i Re-apply the Zinc Primer, then apply "Clear Waxoyl" over this?
Is it ok to apply waxoyl over the primer, or would be best to apply Waxoyl direct to the metal, and not bother with the primer?
If the latter i think I would apply Hammerite Underbody Seal first, then Clear Waxoyl over that.
I like the idea of clear waxoyl so you can see what things are like underneath, but it would be harder to spot if it was starting to come away.
I'd rather go overboard and get as good a job done as possible, and i read this on some random forum:
1) Firstly POR 15
2) Then something like Davids Zinc 182 Primer
3) Then Dinitrol 3125
4) Then Clear Waxoyl
Ive read that Dinitrol 3125 is a 'lighter' wax and is probably more prone to abrasion or weathering over time which is why some people would cover it with something tougher like Waxoyl.
Any help and opinions would be much appreciated
