How should I weld this joint ?

I need to butt weld a 1" 3.2mm wall tube to piece also 1" but approx 6mm wall.

Should I bevel the tubes ? I typically only use 1.6mm rod as it's mostly 3mm or less I weld. If I bevel should I go up to a bigger rod to build up the joint or should I do a root pass then a weave to fill any bevel ?

There's various ways of attacking it, what's it for? If we're talking round tube and something will be flowing through it then could hit the 6mm wall with a countersink and treat it as a 3mm to 3mm butt. I'd just gap something like that slightly wider than the wire but can be Veed instead or even both. Another way would be to prep like a 6GR is done...

or if you just want to stick the two bits of pipe together leave whatever gap/do whatever prep makes you happy and have at it

For TIG welding steel I find 1.6mm pretty versatile to be honest, but hey each to their own

I can't speak for TIG rods but can agree that 1.6mm stick rods are special to use! Useful for certain jobs perhaps, but not exactly great to use especially when coming from 3.2's!

So poor Sardine has just got confused and has made a valid point about a horrible size of stick rods, just in the wrong place!

nothing flowing through it. It's a steering shaft to a UJ. It will have a stepped sleeve inside to fit each section, was just concerend the bevel would be too much to fill in one pass or with 1.6mm rod ?

Easy solution to that is shallower bevel or do it in more than one pass.

plus would you say 2.4 tungsten rather than 1.6 given the material thickness quoted? I'd mig that job but maybe the gent only has TIG?
I guess 1.6 will get it done in multi passes as you have advised.

I'd use a 2.4 tungsten and 1.6 filler

thanks guys, I do have MIG but don't like using it on small diameter tube. I'll go up in tungsten and rod and use root gap. If I can't get it in one pass I'll cap it with a second.

If it's a steering column I personally wouldn't butt it, I would bore out and slide inside slightly then weld around and also plug weld, 1.6 rod & tungsten
