how to apply clear coat

Hi everyone,

I haven't sprayed anything with clear coat yet, but hoping to soon.

I was wondering if spraying the clear coat involved the same process as spraying a colour coat. Where you would normally sand the panel down with 600g then spray?

Or can it be sprayed over colour coat directly without sanding, because I've read stories were clear coat can wrinkle up due to the preparation not being correct.

Also any use full tips?

I go straight onto the colour coat but spray a light coat first pass to give key.

If its base and clear, the clear coat should be applied within 90minutes of the base coat being applied. Something to do with a bonding process that occurs between the coats, apparently after around 90 minutes this bonding process wont happen. The result is the clear coat floats on top of the base and can peel off.

If you do have a problem with the base you can wait for it to dry a bit and just nib it off, but there is no need to rub the base coat down.

de-nib is to light sand just to remove dust specks and the like.in fact most can be taken off with just your palm,or fine scotch-pads.
90 mins is a long time to leave before topcoating,most of my spec
sheets say 30 mins.
and dont mix clear to far in advance,or it will go off in gun.
not easy to clean guns out if it goes off.

no,600 much too coarse.
i use the fine scotch pads (gray ones)
if it needs wet/dry,then use 2000 grit and lots of water.
make sure its dry from water before spraying,i keep a old hair drier at hand for that.
hope this helps.
oh and dont rub with finger tips as that will give you lines that will show up
in finished job.
