how to make a star

Hi to all.

Today I made a "thing" to protect the table top from the hot pans (by the way, how do you call it?)

Inside I fabricated a star. But it took me 15 pieces to make it.

How can a star be made without all this hassle?

Lass hassle would be a plasma cutter, just cut the shape from one piece of plate.

I'd have cut out the 3 V's and worked them together, with heat if necessary then welded them up.

Ah but think of it in three dimensions, that clever setup reduces thermal contact to the table top.

I like the original much better.

Ah I didn't realise it was woven together, thought it was just a star shape.
But even the woven version should only be 5 parts, not 15....?

I don't think the original was woven now I've thought about it and the clue is the parts count ;-) I think it was just my incorrect interpretation of it but I thought it sounded like a nice design :-)

The original is on a flat surface.

But the 3d version could be interesting. Only problem is that I don't have a torch (apart from the tig).

Now I will have to call my friend with a roller to make some other round thing.
