How to remove screw thread on a Swindens Vice

Well strip down was relatively staright forward with no serious damage:

Now am scratching my head as to how the lever/screw is retained - no sign of a circlip:

When I look on the older ones, there is a retainer screwed to the outer face. Anyone taken one appart and know how it is removed?

The circlip is just visible inside the screw bore, needed to use my shortest 90 degree circlip pliers and a torch to get at it.

Found the year and original customer when I started cleaning it up:

Started cleaning up the parts:

Some butcher has removed it with an angle grinder:

Think I will just mill the faces flat.
Not sure if that is a blob of weld on the anvil, suppose I will mill it flat too.

Will clean up bore, there was still some machining swarf hanging on around the edges of the machined bore.

The handle seems to act as a thrust bearing:

and mating face:

Will look into fitting a thrust bearing.

The clearance from this has also caused some pick up at the circlip:

So another area to clean up on the lathe.

Overall its pretty good, though not that old at 1988 issue.

I'd definitely fit a bearing of some sort, Tom. Even a plain bronze washer would be better than nothing.

yes, not the best design, everything else looks good.

That might look better if you spot faced each hole to the outer diameter of the projecting circular boss. It would look like an engineered solution to fixing it down well.

Will see how large a diameter I would need to go out, they are a mess.

The clamp handle is welded on so squadies don’t lose them.
You can grind the weld off and adapt the spigot so the handle is removable.

Makes the vice more useable. Here’s how I did it. The handle already has the hex hole.

Took the handle off today with the hydraulic press:

The galled faces on the screw shaft needed cleaned up.

Cleaned up

Ordered a thrust bearing to prevent this happening again, will remachine pocket in jaws a fraction to size for bearing.

Now having fun clamping casting to machine feet flat where butchered

For @Dcal , the thrust bearing was a good fit for me, need to machine about 0.5mm from the housing to get a good fit.

Finally got back to the Swindens,
skimmed the weld spatter off the anvil:

painted it:

Thrust bearing oiled and fitted:

All assembled, I removed the weld on the handle:

All seems to work smoothly:

Just need to bolt to the bench now:
