How to safely secure steel pipes on roof rack?

The pipes are 10ft long, 6 of them, 100mm diameter. My roof is a small van, approx 6ft long(the roof is 6ft, the van about 10). So, obviously the 6 pipes will stick out past the roof. I am concerned the pipes will slide forward or backward while driving, the pipes moving side to side isn't an issue. How can I ensure the pipes don't move forward or backward? Thanks.

Ratchet strap pairs of them together (so you need minimum 5 no., 20 foot long straps) through the bore. That makes a block of six. Tie them down to the roofrack and then use two more straps, one to the front and one to the back to stop them moving forward or backward (so if they try to go forward, the front strap gets tighter etc.).

Two pieces of 3 x 2 timber and two lengths of threaded rod would span the ends and keep them together as a unit in the fore and aft direction. Same straps as above.

Tack weld two pieces of of steel to the underside of the pipes so they drop in between the roof bars (assuming the bars run left-right on the van).

That is a good idea. Maybe pictures of a 'tripod lashing' doubled up (hexapod lashing?) would also help.

Round lashings do not generally show the fore-and-aft-wraps between the pieces, which are needed for more than two items.

first off drive at a lower speed when carrying them as your in no hurry to get where your going

when carrying 6 lengths of 4" piping there fun and slide for fun

i have a wood frames with caped ends that goes over the lot of them front and rear

strap over 3 of them one side of the roof rack and same with the other side

because they are capped you can strap over the front of them and also at the rear of them as the straps fit through a non move blocks

I had to move half a dozen pipes and took the time to run the ratchet strap over one pipe, under the roofbar, over the next pipe and repeat until all the pipes were secured. They didn't move on the 10 mile journey home.

Might be worth a quick check of load capacity of rack/roof and the weight of the pipe - fat lot of good strapping it to the rack if the rack departs forward too

You might be surprised how little load you can carry on most vehicle roofs

A trick ive used in the past is to strap an old ally ladder to the roof rack first the everything to that , if its longer makes to easier to tie them off so they wont move forwards. Also usefull for flappy stuff like MDF skirting and architrave as it comes in 4.2m lengths .

My Vauxhall Combo van is rated for 150 kg a lot more than most cars I think its about 50kg but I carried way more than that on the wifes old Renault Laguna as it had built in bars

Cant beat an old hessian sack over each end of the bundle, group all the pipes together with a ratchet strap over the bags then strap to the roofrack as one.
