how to tell if paint is 2k or 1k? use 2k thinners?

Hi,

how can you tell if paint already on a vehicle is 2k or 1k? will 2k thinners disolve 2k or 1k?

1k will disolve with thinners,2k will not.

do you mean 2k thinners or standard celly thinners? it's a 97 sprinter.

if its the original paint its 2k if its 1k you should get some paint off with a quick wipe with celly thinners

thanks it's not original-will it come off a lot or just a tiny bit on the rag?

I might just use barcoat to be safe-already spent 2 days preping it will probably be another 2 days on top of that as well

yes usually you would get some off with a a rag depending on what it is it may need more then a quick glance though could be celly or synthetic you could use barcoat it would save the hassle of reaction and then having to prep all over again for the sake of ten pounds or slightly more

Barcoat is a isolator that you spray over the vehicle before priming, top coat to prevent you getting a reaction with the paint thats already on the vehicle.

nobody asked what colour it was? it could be base and clear coat, very often the case with metalic colours.
Barcote it to be safe, the only down side to barcote is it tends to leave a slightly rough finish, but you can always nib it off with a scotchbrite, just don't brake through it.

both right,it was white once then grey and blue now.Soon to be dark met silver...hopefully

Just a word of warning on 2 pack , my friend is a professional sprayer with all the correct equipment and air fed mask etc. last year he encountered breathing prob's, went to see a specialist, told him his probs and the first question asked was he using 2pk paint at any time.
Doc told him no mask will stop the spores of it entering the air and there still active 3 hours after spraying. Be more than careful folks

Only one I've heard of (from a guy on another forum) is a House of Kolor epoxy, but I'm not rich enough to look at tins of HoK let alone use the stuff....
