Howday all!
A bit late in this intro – six posts elsewhere – still better late than never. Found this site like others googling for the spec on Migs on fleabay – and very pleased to have done so. Congrats on a most excellent site – what the internet was supposed to be all about! Have spent the past fortnight reading a lot of threads already, especially for first timers – what to buy etc and what not!
Did a stick course in the 90s and bought a Cosmo 180 which I got quite good at - built a set of heavy duty roof bars which doubled up as an engine hoist to drop the power unit out of my Vdub trainspotter (T25). Some garden gates and the usual hobby stuff.
Am currently doing a Mig course at college here in exeter – six three hour sessions for £120 which is good value for the pennies especially as I decided to start mig after an £800 quote to repair my latest T25 – that was just for the n/s sill let alone the rear wheel arch and offside side panel and floor pan. Shall start a project thread here soon to – hopefully – get guidance on this resto.
Opted for a Clarke 90EN which was delivered last week – no cut fingers but still like a kid at chrimbo! It is set up for no-gas so need to get some bits for gas welding – thanks to steve @ weldequip for advice – shall make me mind up next week on which helmet to go for.
My tutor is letting me take it into college on Wednesday to see what it could do so am cautiously expectant – he seemed surprised on my choice – such a low amp model. I mentioned the advice on here re- lowest current settings for thin sheet metal and the 90EN does go down as far as 24A although I only read the article on its top end range after I had made my choice. I think for all the work I intend to do on my van it should suffice and can always get a bigger one later if needs be, to compliment it.
I work at a local superstore as groundsperson/outdoor cleaner, have to be off site by 9.am so lots of daylight for projects – my main passion is my allotment which may have to suffer a bit this year as I’m determined to get a decent van up and running for the next ten years or so.
When not down the allotment or in the garage I’m stewarding for Oxfam at music festies or up on the north coast somehwhere making a fool of myself on various pieces of fiberglass and mushy waves!
Cheers to all for the mo – beddybyes is calling – up again at 2am
