Hows this finish done

Anyone throw up some ideas on how i can achieve a finish like this
I'm referring to the rough part of this bell

I thought maybe plasma cutter set on very low settings,i cant see it being weld beads as it doesn't look as its added
OA perhaps?
Any clues?

I'd imagine the texture is part of the original modelling, and the smooth areas polished/smoothed as much as wanted after it was cast. Not sure how you'd recreate that surface without it being cast to be honest ...a lot of time with a Dremel perhaps.

Maybe he gouges it, then turns it in a lathe to achieve the 'regular' finish?

Are you sure that is a 1-piece item?
It's not something like lead cast into an open tray of wet sand to make a sheet then trimmed up and wrapped around after?

That sort of finish looks like my first attempts at casting alloy!

is it not just something soft like lead that bit hit with a pointy hammer.

Could it be the splatter from a piece of metal being cut by plasma and allowed t hit the finished item, embedding/fusing to the surface. Bit like Edd China did with an angle grinder + bit of odd steel and aimed the sparks at a stencil on a truck window to give a rusty etched look (each to there own )

Well its not with a plasma i tried heres my efforts


Turned right down to 20amps i was still cutting through 6mm
Tried with less air 30psi
Tried moving quick with the tip well away than normal about 10 mm
Tried the gouging method but you still cut in his dont look cut in
I reckon its a bad case of OA welding just by laying as much rod in the hot pool as you can

Looks like the finish material was applied to, rather than gouged out from the substrate. Saw a similar effect when blowing solder out of a lot of PCB through holes. The board placed underneath the PCB had a similar finish. Maybe this is plasma deposition e.g. shoving a welding rod through a plasma jet.

I've achieved a slightly similar finish in the past using mig with the gas turned off then wire brushing heavily with angle grinder.

Now that actually did cross my mind,might just give that idea a try

Would you achieve a finish like that with chemical etching? It'd have to be aggressive as hell I admit, but it might do the trick?

I reckon it's an overlay of lead which has been attacked with a chipping hammer.

the original piece is just loads of random spots, rather than ordered lines like you've done. The plasma is the way to do it you just need to work on it more.

It's an overlay and I recon it's been done with a texture faced hammer
