humming motor

The motor on my Ingersoll rand just starts humming when switched on with no movement.anyone know what the problem could be.

If it's single phase it's highly likely to be a goosed start capacitor.

either the starting winding centrifugal switch is stuck or starting cap is knacked . take the belt of and pull it over by hand . if it runs thats more than likely the problem

Cheers folks where is the best place to get one of these and how much.also it was left outside for a month or so covered over so more than likely its the damp what's caused it.

if its the capacitor get one of ebay if its the centrfugal switch thats stuck bat the motor with a hammer
when u try and start it now and then my drill motor sticks and a quick bat cures it

Have a look at the cap or caps, check for swelling or fluid leaking out, or possibly worse if it's gone bang !

If it's been left out in the recent damp weather, even coverd up, it could be that there's rust between rotor and stator and this has caused the motor to seize. It might be free-able with a bit of grunt applied to the shaft.

The capacitor could be tested using a multimeter.
