HVLP turbine sprayers

I just took delivery of a pair of used paint guns off ebay, I purchased them because one of the guns was spares for an old suction feed I am restoring.

The other gun in the auction is a vintage Apollo HVLP turbine gun. I have no experience of these but I understand they work well and have a good transfer efficiency.

Should I try and source/make a turbine blower and get this up and running? I like a challenge and restoring old tools, if the spray quality is good then perhaps It would be worth the effort.

Would one of the vacuum cleaners that will blow as well as suck give enough air with the filters removed? Have to clean the dust out I know. Never used an Apollo, but I know people used to rate them.

According to research I've done this afternoon, yes... I will cobble it up to my shop vac and try it.

Only problem with a vac is if you restrict the outlet force you will soon overheat and knacker the vac, you would need to have some sort of bypass on the outlet that opened every time you release the gun trigger.
I used one on a forge once, lasted about half a day and that was the end of it.

I painted my first Mk1 Escort with an Apollo over 40 years ago and it came out well. Father in law did his car with a vacuum cleaner attachment spray gun. It didn't have a trigger or anything you just put your finger over a hole in the top to start the paint and removed it to stop. It worked alright.

I have an Apollo Master, bought in around '93 and I am keeping it, along with the gun that Hugh is sending me...
I originally bought it to limit the overspray on gates, but found that it did not live up to their spiel and the plastic gun was a bit tricky, so went the electro static route for a lot more bucks. But some of my work was wood stoves and the paint was mega expensive, so overspray was painful.
Now, it looks more useful, so dusting it off.

Friend bought a HVLP at the local B&Q, €50 and works fine. Mine cost (all those yrs ago) over £180 for the kit. But, It was built in UK! (I think..)

It didn't have a trigger or anything you just put your finger over a hole in the top to start the paint and removed it to stop. It worked alright.

We had one of those, well my mother had one 'the vacume cleaner' which is all she used. When we were in our teens (my brother and I) we found this, what looked like a spray gun (glass bowl thing) black plastic (more like bakalite) lid. As pedrobedro says just put your finger over the hole whilst the vac vac was going and you could regulate the paint flow. Oh by the way you had to plug the suction hose in the bottom of the vac which was the air discharge port.

One thing we learnt don't bang the hose as you would get a very textured or non slip paint finish
