hwlp wiring in my 3 phase compressor.

Hopeing someone on here can help me. i picked up an ingersoll rand 10hp 35cfm compressor on the cheap a whilst back to use on my paint booth in my unit (just finished fabricating it)

now my electrician has been in and run me a new meter from the units existing 3phase supply all the way round to my booth (compressor sits next to this) its all powered up (the board) and we had a go today at wiring up the compressor.


the problem i have is i am sure i am missing either some form of control box for it or a starter box? i have 6 wires running in a conduit from the 3ph motor (plus one earth) and then on a separate conduit 6 red smaller wires and 2 earths (4 go to the pressure control valve and 2 go to the pressure relief valve)

the problem i have is i have no idea what form of control box or i cant find any circuit diagrams for the ingersoll rand compressor (model is a TA10/250) the basic diagrams i have show l1.l2.l3 all running into " Control Circuit Fuse" which i assume is some form of control/distribution box for the 6 large 3 phase wires and the smaller red wires for the valves and pressure switch


does anyone know where i can grab a new or second hand unit for this? really has thrown a spanner in the works for me and finding any form of diagrams other than the basic one in the manual is proving useless

Probably needs a delta starter if 6 wires

yes it defiantly has 6 wires daz. there was a small set of instructions inside the box ontop of the drive motor when i opened it up and i am sure looking at one it said star or delta (it gave about 4/5 different wiring options)

i have a photo of its current configuration. any idea as to where these thinner wires will run or would i have to run 2 different starters (i can do automotive wiring no problems but 3ph runs right over my head lol)

would it help if i post up a set of pictures?

I have a delta starter on my universal woodworking machine. Turning the switch to the first position activates a contactor that starts the motor in delta, when it is up to speed you flick the switch to the second position which puts the motor into star for running.

Hello Aarran,

yes it sounds as if you need a star/delta starter, you can buy one quite easily and these days it's just one push button to start as there is a built in timer to delay the change over. The small red wires will need to be connected to the starter but you'll need to find out exactly what they are supposed to control so some working out will be necessary from where they are connected to?

alec there are 4 red wires + earth which go to the main off/auto switch on the pressure control valve/unit , there are another 2 red and another earth that run to the emergency pressure relief valve. no idea what voltage these run at mind as the wire is not much thicker than 240v stuff, and on the pressure unit the cover says its good for 500v (would not like to pop 500v through one of those)

i would assume looking in my 3 phase benson booth heater which has a control board/starter on it it will come with some form of solenoid that once the tank drops pressure it will fire this soloniod and run the motor to keep the tank charged up? (do most of these delta ones have that feature as standard or would that be another bit i need to buy?)

just hoping i can find a cheap enough delta starter, completely skint right now as buying all the steel for the booth, all the three phase stuff and other unit things have skinted me out. got 14 cars ready to crack on with but cant do them until i get my compressor running :lol:

cant seem to find a wiring diagram as to what the 4 red wires coming out of it run to mind....... (been looking for 2 hours now lol)

this is going to sound stupid but will a star delta starter box come with the switch that will control the starting and stopping of the three phase motor in it? (ie i connect up the 4 wires from the pressure switch to this and it will auto start and stop the motor on the compressor) or will it likely only come with the terminals/blocks for the star setup and timer and i will have to add an additional part for the pressure valve wiring to plug into?

right crompton do a delta starter for motors (diagrams above for them)

THis is the original ingersol rand diagram (went through hell to find this dammed thing)

looking at them both in detail tonight but does anyone know which of the crompton starters will be closest to the original ingersol rand unit?
