Hydrovane 15

Hi all.

Been lurking for a while and now I need some help.

I have just purchased a old hydrovane 15, its a 240v on a 100l tank.

The previous owner said it was serviced 2 months ago

I would like to clarify this for my own peace of mind. Also I can not find what fad or cfm this will supply.

I do minor car body repairs and need it to run a DA sander, sprayguns and airfed mask. I have also got a 275 litre tank to hook it up to.

So few questions.


1. Does anyone know the FAD/CFM this puts out?

2. How can I check if it has been serviced?

3. Is there a service manual available if I do need to service it?

4. If I connect to another tank, still using the 100l it is mounted on, does the bigger tank (275 litre) need to be next to it or can I have it 20feet or so away?

I would be really greatful for any advice as I can not seem to find any info on this unit. Maybe it should be in a museum

It will either be 4 or 8 CFM depending on the motor, which is either a 1.1 or 2.2 KW. So if you check the motor size you will know the CFM. If it's the 4 cfm there is no chance of running the items you mention, even the 8 cfm will struggle.
The size of receiver doesn't make any difference to air output.

I also have a mattei AS1 that I was thinking of linking up together and having both run into the larger tank?

Ok, so anyone have any ideas how I can get a service manual or is this a specialist job, the mattei was straight forward enough for me.

To check that it has been serviced you could check the air filter, this is under the end cover, the one with the gauge protruding through it. If thats clean it has most likely been serviced. Service kits are available from a Hydrovane dealer. One thing Hydrovanes are extremely fussy about is oil ! You MUST, MUST, MUST use the special Hydrovane oil. This is rated for 2000 Hrs of service, IF, the compressor is used in normal service. Normal service is daily operation at normal working temperature. Now as these compressors are designed for continuous service at full output they really like to be hot !
Used like that the oil is ok for the 2000 hrs. If usage is intermittent with lots of standing around, change it every 3 to 6 months regardless.
Ignoring to do that will cause internal corrosion and will scrap the compressor.

I have just popped off the cover and the grey filter does look like it could do with going in the bin.

Are these kits OK to use? Would you recommend I just change oil and the foam filter or should I give it a bit more tlc?

Also, will the oil that I got from Mattei be ok to use in the hydrovane?

If it's running ok I would just get a general service kit which is air and oil filters and oil. Do that then you have a reference point to know when it was serviced and for future attention.

Not sure what that oil you mention is but it's doubtful it will be ok for the Hydrovane.
Thorite sell the genuine stuff and I strongly recommend you don't use anything else.

Just been on that site and had a look, thanks for that. So if I buy that kit I will need to also buy the oil, how much do you think I will need? Will 1 ltr be enough?

When I removed the air filter it does not look that bad, there was a little red oil on the inside which I just cleaned off.

I removed a little oil and its red and looks clean, does this sound like its the correct oil?

Do you know where the oil filter is on this unit, the air filter is easy enough, draining the oil and topping up looks straight forward.

Red oil is a recent colour, clean is good ! The oil filter is behind the end cover which is seen under the cover you removed to access the air filter. It's easy enough to do.
You know, for the life of me I can't remember the quantity of oil needed ! Thorite will be able to tell you though. I have a feeling it's just over a ltr !
