Hydrovane 87 switch

I have just been given a Hydrovane 87 which has a broken switch. The one which is for choosing manual or auto running. Would it be okay to go to electric wholesaler and buy a 3 way switch with blocks behind for wiring in the 5 wires. Is there more to it than that or should a off the shelf switch work just fine?

Welcome to the forum.

All three way switches with 5 wires on the back won't necessarily work in the same way.

You'll need to get the proper part or trace out the connections on your switch and get one the same.

If it's broken beyond investigation then knowing where the wires from the switch connect to on the compressor would help.

The proper part is no longer available. It was discontinued in 2007. I think I will probably have to get an electrician who knows what he is doing to fit a new switch.I spoke to a compressor supplier(not hydrovane) and he said just go to a electrical wholesaler and get a switch. This is the back of switch if you can give me any more info

Educated guess from the picture is you need a 22mm panel mount 3 position selector switch - example

That doesn't look too complicated, I'd try going to a wholesaler as suggested.

Does that switch give:- (Continuous) Off ( Intermittent)

Ie, runs up to pressure then stays on running off load, or fills tank then stops until pressure drops?

A picture of the front and knowing where the switch will "stay put" in left, centre & right positions will help narrow it down.

Yes the switch either goes to the left for manual mode,straight up and down is off and to the right it is in automatic mode.

Looks like Robotstart5 switch in the above link should be ok, If your switch is 2NO i can't see from the photo.

You need to confirm that your switch is 2NO

Hi Chris It says on the side of switch that it is Type DA02. If you click on photo and enlarge you should can see all the writing. I cant see anywhere it says 2NO. Would you know what switch could replace this if not a 2NO. Cheers

2NO means 2 Normally Open contacts, "Normal" being the off position.

It looks like there may be a couple of microswitches in a fancy holder.

Is the switch mechanically broken so it won't turn and stay in position or electrically broken in that it turns but the contacts don't make / break.
This type of switch is a standard industrial type all the parts from one manufacture are interchangeable and are built up it kit form. Making maintenance easy once you chose a manufacturer then, Rotary, push, illuminated, buzzers,key in NC NO either maintained or momentary all interchangeable.

You can mark and remove the wires. (Ensuring Power Is Isolated)
Then test with a multimeter they will be either:-

Set meter to resistance or continuity then:-

NO your meter will either bleep and the display change when the switch is operated.
or
NC your meter will either bleep and the display change as soon as connected only returning to normal when the switch is released.

Once you know what you have you can find a replacement. Somewhere like rs will have a part with instant delivery but it will be expensive or try ebay but it will take a few days.
If i order from RS before 6 its normally with me before 10 the next morning.

When I got the multi meter out when I made a circuit it did start to bleep but I think that was because of the broken switch. If I pressed in the 2 blue tabs of broken switch it broke the circuit. I suspect if the switch was not broken the blue tabs would be shoved in all the time therefore I think it will be a NO switch. I have taken photo of wiring diagram to see if this helps anybody who knows about these things. Thanks for help received so far!

That selector switch is effectively a 1 pole 2 way (SPDT) with a centre off. Wires 22 & 10 are connected for auto (?) 22 and 32 for manual (?) and as shown for off.

Not really, it's a double pole, double throw switch with centre off, with the commons connected.

^^ I said EFFECTIVELY. it's a DPST (Double pole single throw) wired as a SPDT. With a centre off.

It's only got 4 connections, a DPDT would have 6.

More accurately 2 x SPST mechanically linked out of phase, wired as SPDT

I didn't look at it in the context of the circuit. A strange way of drawing it. Is this due to the separate switch elements used, do you know?

Probably as it's a wiring diagram rather than a circuit diagram.

i can't fully see from your photo but that switch should have:-
wire 10 in one side.
wire 32 in the other side.
wire 22 linking between the other 2 terminals.

As long as a replacement switch is mechanically interlocked so that only one side is operated at any time it should be fine.
