Hydrovane road tow compressor for blasting

I have just bought a Hydrovane HV4 compressor for hobby sand blasting. It has a Perkins 4cyl diesel engine. It works fine, gives out 85cfm at 7bar but is desperate for a service judging by the state of the oil in the engine and a date of Dec 01 on the oil filter. So no problem for the engine, 6 litres of Shell helix and a new oil filter (same as a Landrover Disco) and now I feel better and I am sure the Perkins does too. The engine hours show 2456 and I think that is probably right which means the compressor needs new oil and filter. (Doubt it has ever been changed) Problem is where do you get oil and filters for the compressor from? I don't know any suppliers and the Yellow Pages doesn't list anyone advertising spares. Anybody offer any suggestion where to look and who to talk to? Anyone else got one?

If you're really stuck, go to one of your local plant hire firms and buy what you need off them

I had to do this last year when I got my hands on a Compair 130, after being told it did not need anything by the **** selling it

After a good look around the thing I had to get every filter on it ( the primary air filters were flapping around inside their housing like a hand in a clowns pocket )

Total cost from memory was around £80 including oil

If you're struggling locally you could try this place.

It's not just oil and filters for the compressor side you need. If it's done over two thousand hours the oil separator probably needs looking at and that isn't cheap, think £100+
Best do the basic service first and see how much oil is going down your air lines.

Hi Stormin,
Thanks for the link, I'll give them a call on Monday. I have used the compressor already to blast a couple of tractor wheels and it works great. I didn't detect any oil residue from the compressor on the wheels so I think a basic oil change will see me through. I understand hydrovanes work well for many, many thousands of hours given the oil and filters are changed as required. I can't seem to find a manual online, so I'll just do the easy bits I can see first.

I recently bought an old Compair and couldn't find a manual. I e-mailed compair and they sent me pdf copies of user and parts manuals within the hour. Great service from them!
You could try the same with Hydrovane.

I ended up doing the same. The air filter for my compressor intake was virtually just a solid lump of gunge - I'm amazed that it still worked. The oil inside the compressor was still full albeit very thin and dirty so new air filter drain and refill with 5litres of Compair oil, cleaned the gauze strainer and the performance now is superb. The oil is good for 2000 hours so it will probably outlast me. It originally used to stall when first started now I know why! Total cost was £50 for the air filter and compressor oil and about £25 for the engine oil and filter. So about the same as yours really. I got all the parts locally in the end. The compressor now starts straight away from cold, delivers 85cfm at 7 bar and is more than adequate for a 3mm nozzle to blast my tractor wheels and other agricultural projects I have my eye on.

You could try the same with Hydrovane.

I emailled Hydrovane (now part of Compair) and by return a PDF handbook - Result. I'm well impressed for a 20 yr old compressor. Wow.

They even emailled me the part no's I needed for the service and told me where to get them from.

Who was the helpful person who sent you the PDF copy ?

I have found the servicing instruction manual for many other hydrovanes on the internet, but not for the model 23.
