hydrovane 15 problems

hi i got a hydrovane 15 given me from my m8s scrap yard it had all the wires hanging out so i had another freind a sparky have a look and sort the wiring out and it fired up the problem is when testing he found it is pulling 45 amps about 3x what it should. would anyone know why it might be doing this and is it a lost cause? and does it need taking back to the scrap yard ?

that means it should be running at 15 amp . a 3hp motor is roughly 12 amp so how many horsepower is it and what does the motor rating plate say.full load amps or how many kw ??

my m8 was thinking it might be poss that it its not swaping over to the other capasitor somthing about a switch that spins out in the motor ???

Do you know if it's running at the correct speed ? Is it running hot ? Pulling 45 amps it probably is !

ah we didnt run it for long probably 20/30 seconds

theres a centrifugal switch on the starting windings u can generaly hear them open when up to speed and shut when turned off

the unit produces air if the worst came to worst how easy/expensive would it be to
replace the motor ?

with it being hydrovane it will probably be flange mounted . u could take it off and take to a motor rewinders and get a price to rewind or look at or get a replacement flange mounted motor but the shaft size would have to be the same to match the original. u might be able to pick one up for £100 QUID ISH ebay ect

i will try all options but if all else fails i will replace/repair the motor
if it cost around £100 to sort it would still be a cheap good compressor

There isn't necessarily a switch, it can also be a thermistor which increases resistance as the windings heat and disconnects the start cap or the start cap could be left in circuit regardless which improves torque. The type can be determined form the motor spec plate.

On the other hand, perhaps the compressor is partially jammed ( for example, due to a lubrication problem ), and loading the motor too much ?
