Hyundai 7018 rods

Afternoon all,
Just went for a wander to the local welding suppliers/engineering merchant and bought a box of Hyundai S-7018 rods in 2.5mm for the grand sum of a fiver,they had a few boxes of various sizes to clear so I thought worth a fiver.

Has anyone used them before? I'm sure they're made by someone else out of scrap bean tins but hey ho,if they're any good I'll get a box of 3.2's as well.

You'd be surprised, Hyundai are massive, and make things you'd not imagine!

Oh I know they're massive Dan,they make ships and huge heavy plant machinery, just me being cynical I guess,just googled them and they retail at £30 +vat upwards.

Hyundai make good welding products, everything MMA, MIG, FCW TIG etc etc. Lincoln were about to buy them a few years ago so we ran trials with a lot of their products. I think the 7018 was good but thats relying on my memory.
Id rather buy Hyundai that the SIF, SWP, etc etc at least you know it will probably be the same if you buy more.

I have burned a few of their 6013 rods and they are nice.says they are low fume on the carton but dont know if theres a visible difference.
they are ultra cheap here too

When they say low fume they are actually low current.......fume is proportionate to current.............but you have to be careful about penetration

Id never have linked the two.ill have another look at the box for current settings compared to the european rutiles i have

I have had loads of boxes of Hyundai 6013 3.2mm electrodes. They seem OK

They too are cheap from our local welding supply van!

Hyundai make monster container ships.

Years ago I had a white 1989 (G-reg) Hyundai Pony pick up truck! Truthfully it was too bad, a bit slow due to the tiny 1200cc Mitsubishi engine. I used it for about three years to go to work in. It was a free-be. Customer would not pay for the buck floor to be welded up for an MOT. From memory I think I only did the welding and put a battery on it all the time I owned it.

Makes sense really, fume is generated from the burning of the electrode and parent material. Apply more current and you'll exaggerate the process further generating more fume. Arc air gouging is a good example. 10mm carbons with 5-600 amps behind them will fill a workshop with fume in minutes.

A 2.5mm cellulose rod at 60 amps will give out a hell of a lot more fume/smoke than a 3.2 6013 at 120 amps.
thats what led me to presume the flux coating was somehow adapted for lower fume.wrongly though

It's proportional on electrode size/type. A 2.5 6013 at 60 amps will generate more fume than a 2.5 6013 at 50 amps. I agree celulosics produce huge amounts of horrible fumes. Far worse than rutiles.

The cellulosics produce loads of "visible" fume, 7018s tend to produce more "particulate" fume........both are toxic so it doesnt really matter but some products / process appear worse than others when really there isnt much difference
