As some may recall my Shogun was crashed into before Christmas and finally it has been picked up for repairs with a hire car supplied through Enterprise. My only stipulation on the courtesy car was it had to be a minimum of an estate for the dog and automatic. I didn't expect a Merc GLB, a big step up from the Shogun. I should be having fun in this car but I'm hating it. It's not because it's a 1.4 petrol as it is surprisingly nippy for such a small engine in a fairly large car thanks to its electric assistance when setting off and combined with the gearbox it performs very well. It is just as spacious as the Shogun to drive in some bizarre TARDIS way, it's just a bit lower and of course it handles better.
The problem is everything is digital and information overload with driving assistance that I don't want and can't seem to switch off either. The heater controls are an after thought but at least they have buttons even if it is on a tiny panel. What the heat setting is anyones guess though as the giant iPads that have taken the place of a normal clocks show the temp at the very bottom left with a tiny font that needs reading glasses to see but the rest of the giant touch screen is taken up with 3 huge pretty icons but you can scroll to the next screen of huge icons and the next after that but trying to see where the air is been directed is anyones guess.
Even the steering wheel is touch sensitive but again the font and buttons are tiny so the dash screen randomly changes because I've grazed a button. Along with the random things popping up on the screen from accidental contact with the steering wheel are warnings popping up including the speedo flashing because I have exceeded the speed limit by a couple of MPH for less than a minute or other warnings to tell me that a van has just cut me up on the motorway and I'm now too close, I would never have realised the big white van that squeezed into a gap with no indication was now tool close. Various other warnings and beeps have all been too distracting from actually driving the sodding thing. When I said it handles better it does but I feel so disconnected from the experience too.
I should be enjoying this but I'm not and want my Shogun back.
In a digital world I'm an analogue clock.
