I need an industrial air filter housing.

I need a metal air filter housing that I can bolt onto the input of a 10hp vacuum pump.
I already have one pump with an air filter but I have another pump destined for another CNC router that does not have a filter housing.
The pumps have 2” or 3” BSP connections (can remember which) and the current housing is a heavy duty metal cylinder with a large round air filter.

Does anyone know of a suitable unit that I could modify by welding BSP nipples on top the side and bottom?
The official units are something like £500-600 which is out of the question.

The filter on a cnc router is in the vacuum circuit before the pump so is under a high vacuum.
Automotive air filters an housings are at atmospheric pressure.
Have used lorry filters on compressors in dusty environments in the past with good results.

A few years ago I was faced with a similar problem so ended making one from scratch.






How about one of those balloon gas cylinders? They are not as heavy wall as a normal propane/butane cylinder but still probably an ideal starting point for your needs.

Those pumps are rather finely tolerance - even water inside will bug ger them up.

Yet the number I see with the bypass open as the filter is clogged . . .

the larger Massey fergusson model tractors have something like that and with a DOUBLE filter inside....prob around 3" rubber hose connection.....some metal some plastic bodied.....

What sort of pressure differential are you talking, unless there is a restriction on the inlet a decent metal air filter housing should hold up, with a spring loaded relief to allow for blockage, there are some huge air filter housings on scrap earth moving equipment.
We used old air filter cartridges from Cat's to filter our parts washer, they were round with sealed end dirty fluid into center clean coming out between filter & 205 Ltr drum when clogged you removed the filter with crap very little cleaning required.
Had a mate who was Cat service he used to save a couple for me

How about using a cyclonic filter. Much cheaper, and easier to maintain.

Those filter bodies don't half resemble canal boat water filter units, except with an air filter in. Try ASAP marine supplies.

Cyclones are designed to filter the larger particulates before the air is filtered through an element.
These pumps have very fine tolerances and any dust will prematurely wear them. Therefore they need a proper filter element.

Note, these pumps aren’t sucking up dust, they just create a vacuum (low pressure) inside the CNC plenum bed, this bed uses an MDF spoilboard/bleeder board. The filter is there to filter out any dust that get sucked into the system through any air leaks etc.

If the system is that critical it may be worth a gander at the massey 6000 series filters. Has the main filter with a finer secondary filter that goes inside the main one, all lives in a compact steel casing with a cyclone seperator on top.
