Ideas on removing this bolt

Roof rack mount on a vivario van.

Bolt is chopped off. Can't grab stub from above to tru to loosen nut.

I have tried drilling but can't seem to jam nut to stop it spinning...

Luckily it's for The middle rack rail but would like to get all four rails mounted.

Can you maybe glue it in with araldite from the top, then thread either a junior hacksaw blade or coping saw through the gap in the bracket. Clip the blade into the frame of the saw and cut it off.

Isn't this a job for a stud extractor?

If you have welder it should be possible to add weld to the end of the bolt, small tacks to increase the length of the bolt so it can be griped above the bracket on the roof. Roof will need plenty of protection as will windscreens.

I recently used the same process to remove some m8 bolts that had snapped off below the surface on a pump without damaging the threads. Mig is easier if you have one.

Is that the nut just visible under the top edge? can you not either grip it with a pair of narrow mole grips to hold the thread under the nut, failing that it might be possible to grind down a spanner (an old cheap one) if a normal one wont fit in to hold the nut then drill it out.

Wedge some long nose pliers in to hold the nut then drill it out carefully.

Drop a washer over the top of the stud and weld them, then weld a nut to the washer, that means you can hold it still while you do as Johnnybravo suggests. Only cut the thread off below the nut then above it, because it looks tight for clearance to get it out.

if the nut is under the bracket part? use a multi tool above and below the nut ??

Cut the horizontal top off the bracket. Keep the vertical legs. Bend out of the way if necessary but do not cut off.

Make a U-shaped replacement when finished and either plug weld the sides or pop rivet or slim head bolts from the inside before installing the replacement vertical one.

I wondered about long nose Vice grips if they would fit?

Clean the top of bolt with a flap disc. Weld on large nut. Wait for a few mins then work it out with lots of penetrating oil

As above long nosed vice grips to hold nut / cut down spanner / flat bladed screwdriver rammed down the side. Then junior hacksaw to cut the thread off as further above. Is the nut supposed to be captive?

The way i would go...junior hacksaw and cut from the top of nut while holding bolt below with long nose pliers

I like the junior hack saw idea, I couldn't think about something small enough to get in. Very little room

Re welding something to it. I only have an arc welder and have done similar but I have no idea how I would get an earth on to this nut. It's loose and rattling around. I can't get any mole grips on it. I think the best sounding Idea is grinding down a old spanner. Might be able to get a earth via that.

Small g clamp in through the sides to hold it and earth via that? Or Just weld your cut off spanner to it. Mind you if your clamp can hold it you can cut it!

For an earth connection drive a small mild steel wedge against the nut to lock it and hold it after welding. After plenty of release fluid it should release the damaged screw remains. Good luck

Maybe driving the wedge so it is going in the unscrewing direction could be a bonus enhancement to this idea.

Difficult to see - use a flat bladed screwdriver either side of the nut to wedge it against the housing?
Nut looks semi-destroyed exposing the bolt inside, can you just break more edges of the nut away so it falls off the bolt? (narrow chisel or use an old screwdriver and twist to open up the slot in the nut?
Screw extractors?

As it a welding forum ... weld a nut onto the stud and unscrew it or weld the rack onto the roof

G clamp or big grips each side of the hole on the bent sides. The bracket will bend with a upwards V until you can pull stud and nut out.
Hammer flat and paint.
